In a tailored, individual approach to therapy.
We understand that each client comes to us with a unique set of goals, history, personality, and preferences for the style and pace of therapy. Therapy is not (and should not be) one size fits all! We create a tailored approach to working with each client and believe the therapy process should be collaborative. We welcome your feedback on how therapy is going and adjust our process accordingly.
In the importance of a solid therapy relationship.
Research shows that the degree of “fit” between you and your therapist is the most important element in helping you create change. Our goal is for you to feel fully and authentically known, safe and not judged, and consistently on the same page with your therapist. You should believe that your therapist shares your goals and is working towards them with you.
That therapy should be “worth it.”
We understand that therapy is a significant investment in both time and money and you want a real return on that investment. The goal is for us to be able to offer you something that you cannot get on your own or elsewhere (at this point) – to challenge you in ways that your current relationships do not, offer you a space to be completely open but not judged, highlight and explore patterns that you may not see yourself, and teach you ways to cope that are based on research and experience you don’t encounter in your daily life.
In an interactive, transparent, and educational experience.
Therapy should not be a “black box” where you go into a session and somehow come out feeling better but having no idea why (or wondering if you even did anything helpful at all). We help our clients understand what about our process is making a difference. We explain what we are thinking and why and check it out with you to see what does and does not fit. We believe it is important share the education we have in ways that are understandable and applicable.
In authenticity.
We are real people (this may sound odd but there are a lot of therapist memes out there) and we believe in the power of relating to our clients genuinely. One mark of good therapy is when you feel you truly know your therapist (how they think, what they will say, etc.) without knowing all the details of their lives (therapy is about you after all).
In developing your independence (rather than creating therapy dependence).
Our goal is not for you to be in therapy forever. Although we typically see clients on a longer term basis our ultimate goal is to become “irrelevant.” This means we help you develop ways to meet your needs outside of therapy rather than solely meeting them through your therapist. We want our clients to create genuine support and authentic relationships outside of therapy, develop insight and self-awareness that they can continue to draw on, and learn skills that you can use as needed. We often help our clients distinguish between when therapy is a “need” and when therapy is a “want.”
In continuing to better ourselves as psychologists and maintain the highest level of professionalism.
As a group we are constantly consulting, collaborating, reading, and researching on behalf of our clients. The field of psychology is continually changing and evolving and we want to ensure that our knowledge and skills are as up to date as possible. We maintain professionalism and have clear boundaries, so you know what to expect while also feeling cared for and connected.
